The Last Day

Remember my 2 1/2-year-old's first day of preschool? Well, yesterday, 3 1/2-year-old Snook celebrated the last day of her first year of preschool with a big shebang. I can't believe it's been a year. But first . . . there were red velvet cupcakes to bake . . . . . . and a picture to take. Who is this young lady? And then she was off! When I picked Snook up after the party, her teacher kindly indulged my camera-happiness by letting me take her picture . . . . . . as well as this adorable group-hug picture . . .

. . . and this picture of Snook and her bestest buds.Look who I had to drag kicking and screaming out of the classroom. I thought boys were supposed to be clingier!

Quite a milestone. I still remember getting all misty-eyed the first time I ever left my first-born in a classroom by herself. Luckily my mom was with me. And Snook was fine. Here's a quick rundown of some of the things she took home from this, her first school experience:
-sweet friendships
-about 25 pounds of playground sand in her shoes
-an even fiercer spirit of independence
-the idea that you eat what's served or you don't eat at all
-roughly 19 colds that she quickly spread to her baby brother, including pink eye, which I of course caught as well
-the security that Mom or Dad will always come pick her up at the end of the day
-respect for authority
-the ability to listen and follow directions (I said school experience)
-clique awareness
-several birthday party invitations
-a penchant for pretending quite convincingly that she's speaking Spanish
-close to 50 art projects that I can't throw away but have no room to store
-a greater sense of empathy
-some crazy idea that she's in charge

She's heading into pre-K next week, a year ahead of schedule, because her teachers think she's socially ready to hang with an older crowd. She'll also get to go on field trips and be formally introduced to some pre-reading concepts. We'll take it one day at a time though because we're in no rush. Way to go Snook! Hope next year is even more fun! And way less germy!
